Substance Use and Overdose Safety: Risk, Recognition and Response

This training will cover substance use and substance use disorder, including why people use drugs and how certain factors can increase overdose risk. We will discuss common overdose risk factors such as changes in tolerance, using alone, mixing substances and the evolving drug supply. The presentation will also include overdose recognition and response, step-by-step naloxone administration and best practices for emergency situations. Additionally, we will review the presence of sedatives like xylazine and medetomidine, how to use test strips when available, and the Good Samaritan Law and local resources for support.
