Working with OSHA –
VPP Status: W3
Speakers: Debbie Zubaty and Dave
Wilson (OSHA)
Time: Registration from 7:30 to
8 a.m.; Program from 8 to 9 a.m.
Cost: Free
Developing safety cultures in
your company is vital not only to your employees’ safety but also to
enhancing your relationship with OSHA. Onsite inspections should be
a way to reaffirm the safety policies your company has already put
in place. Voluntary Protection Programs are a way to partner with
OSHA to demonstrate your company’s commitment to safety, but
acceptance into the program comes with high expectations. Learn from
the local, Columbus-area OSHA leaders about what to expect when
beginning the process of applying for VPP status.
***CEO EVENT*** Safety
Culture: Leading the Change: W4
Speaker: Mark Garver (Ohio BWC)
Time: Registration from 7:30 to
8 a.m.; Program from 8 to 9 a.m.
Cost: Free
All employees have a role in
promoting safe workplaces. One very important role starts at the top
with the CEO. During this seminar, learn how CEOs lead the charge in
developing a strong safety culture in your company. Attendees will
meet the CEO requirement for participation in the Safety Council of
Greater Columbus and gain valuable networking time with other
company leaders.
Scissors, Aerial and Forklift
Equipment Training: W5
Speakers: Various Trainers
(Nations Rent)
Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: $150 per person
Don’t let your company’s
equipment training become cumbersome. Combined lecture, video, and
hands-on equipment training will satisfy OSHA’s training
requirements and give you peace of mind. With the experience of
Nations Rent trainers, your employees will receive quality
information that outlines safety hazards, equipment checks, and
operator training. Class sizes are limited to provide personal,
one-on-one training, and all attendees receive a certificate of
completion after the course.
Drug-Free Supervisors
Training: W8
Speaker: Meri Jo Warner, SAP (Meri
Jo Warner Private Practice)
Time: 8 a.m. to noon
Cost: $59 per person
Meet the four-hour training
requirement from the BWC by sending your front-line supervisors to
this course. Whether you need to address the mandated state
requirement for drug-free workplace compliance, or you want to
qualify for workers’ compensation premium discounts, this four-hour
training is a comprehensive course. After two hours of
supervisory-only training, attendees will join all employees for the
final two hours of training for all employees. Attendees will learn
about the impact substance users and abusers make on your company,
how to identify and address suspicious behaviors and their role in
maintaining a substance-free workplace.
Improve Your Safety Training
100%: W15
Speaker: Don Wilson (SAFESTART
and SAFETRACK)
Time: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Cost: $29 per person
Tired of your employees showing
up early so they can sit at the back, or trying to get out of
safety training whenever they can? Often adults think they’re safe
enough already. Unfortunately, the safety “scare tactic” doesn’t
work, or at least not for very long. However, if you tie safety
training to one of their values, you’ve gotten them hooked. Learn
how to improve your safety training by tying the training to
something your employees already care about – their kids. By
teaching their kids how to be careful, your employees will
also be safer at work. It’s the classic “win-win”.
Trenching and Excavation
Assessments: W17
Speaker: Ron Pendleton (United
Rentals Trench Safety)
Time: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Cost: $59 per person
Any
contractors working in new-build projects are exposed to potential
trenching and excavation safety hazards. Effective project managers
and site superintendents know not just how to identify the soil
being excavated but also know the proper equipment to safeguard
employees. Not all excavations are alike. In this seminar, attendees
will review soil classifications, shoring equipment, use of trench
boxes and the assessments needed to keep all of your employees safe.
Work Zone Safety: Hands-On,
How-To: W18 (9:30 to 10:30) AND W32 (12:30 to 1:30)
Speaker: Parr Peterson (The Paul
Peterson Co.) and Rick Burns (OSHA)
Time: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Cost: $59 per person
Often, we think the orange barrel is just another piece of
construction equipment, but signs, barricades, and traffic control
need our attention. They signal construction for the general public,
but how well do your employees understand how to set-up a work zone?
All contractors, especially general
contractors and construction managers, face traffic control issues
when working on campuses, doing demolition, moving equipment and
delivering materials. Employees of all trades and levels of safety
expertise will benefit from this course.
Overcome Complacency –
Techniques that Dramatically Reduce Injuries: W20
Speaker: Gary Higbee (SAFESTART
and SAFETRACK)
Time: 10 to 11 a.m.
Cost: $29 per person
All acute injuries have at least
three contributing factors: a source of danger, a person and
something unexpected. Would you be surprised to hear that
complacency accounts for more than 90% of acute injuries?
Complacency makes it easier for people to take their eyes and mind
off task. Not watching what you’re doing and not thinking about what
your doing can easily lead to product damage, minor and major
injuries. Learn what you and your company can do to efficiently
minimize the effects of complacency in your workplace. These four
simple techniques are easy to implement and significantly reduce
injuries.
Drug-Free Employee Training:
W19
Speaker: Michelle Kadisevskis
(Builders Exchange of Central Ohio)
Time: 10 a.m. to noon
Cost: $39 per person
Supervisors will join all
employees for this course in order to meet the two-hour training
requirement from the BWC for all employees. Topics will include:
commonly abused substances, identifying risky behaviors and
drug-testing procedures. Whether you need to address the mandated
state requirement for drug-free workplace compliance, or you want to
qualify for workers’ compensation premium discounts, you’ll find the
employee awareness and education training offered through the
Exchange to be a simple, affordable benefit.
Coping with DOT Inspections:
W27
Speaker: Larry Woolum (Ohio
Trucking Association)
Time: 11 a.m. to noon
Cost: $29 per person
Construction companies exposed
to DOT regulations often struggle during a DOT inspection. Learn
your rights during an inspection and what to inspect in this
examination of how inspections take place and what causes them to
occur.
Forklift Equipment Training:
W28
Speakers: Various Trainers
(Nations Rent)
Time: 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $75 per person
Just using forklifts? Designed
as a half-day course, this seminar will review the common hazards
associated with using forklifts, the safety precautions your
employees should be taking, and how to properly operate the
equipment. Attendees will receive this information in a combination
of lecture, video, and hands-on training. Class sizes are limited to
provide personal, one-on-one training, and all attendees receive a
certificate of completion after the course.
Working with Your Managed
Care Organization: W33
Speaker: Scott Vaka (CareWorks)
Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Managed Care Organizations (MCOs)
provide medical management services, and CareWorks manages more than
100,000 Ohio employers. MCOs help injured workers recover from
workplace injuries and return-to-work as quickly and as safely as
possible. The aggressive case management, offered by CareWorks,
reduces your company’s lost-time and helps your bottom-line. Learn
how developing a strong relationship with your MCO before an injury
occurs helps minimize the impact on the injured worker and your
company’s workers’ compensation.
The Supervisor’s
Responsibility for Safety: W36
Speaker: Gary Higbee (SAFESTART
and SAFETRACK)
Time: 1 to 2 p.m.
Cost: $29 per person
Safety is invariably part of the
supervisor’s and team leader’s responsibility, and in most cases,
it’s the hardest part to focus on when production, quality and cost
are so visible, while safety is often invisible until an accident
occurs. Supervisors often give instructions that put them at risk
for personal liability. In this session, learn about different cases
where supervisors were personally sued for their actions or
inaction. Now is a perfect time to stop risky behaviors, correct the
situation and encourage supervisors to start living up to all their
safety responsibilities.
On-Board with OSHA: W43
Speakers: Columbus-area OSHA Compliance Officers
Time: 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.
Cost: $29 per person
Contractors in all trades demonstrate understanding of the
regulations that are directly pertinent to their work; however, in
situations where employees are exposed to hazards they are
unfamiliar with, common questions arise. No question is a stupid
question. Attend this seminar and get answers to your questions
about the regulations.
Nursing Home Safety: OSHA’s
Perspective: W47
Speaker: Linda Harrington (OSHA)
Time: 2 to 3 p.m.
Cost: $59 per person
Nursing homes present safety
challenges unique from other industries. As part of OSHA’s Nursing
Home Initiative, OSHA will discuss bloodborne pathogens, ergonomic
hazard prevention, lockout/tag-out issues, recordkeeping, hazard
communication and violence in the workplace. Come armed with
questions and receive training materials designed specifically for
employees working in nursing homes.
Accident Investigation: Use
it to Prevent the Next One: W48
Speaker: Don Wilson (SAFESTART
and SAFETRACK)
Time: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $29 per person
How many close calls has your
company experienced? The old methodology of simply warning employees
to be careful doesn’t work. Instead, help your employees realize how
all of the factors influence the likelihood of an accident. In this
session, you will learn how to teach employees how to prevent the
next injury:
·
Self
– Trigger
·
Work
on improving habits
·
Observe others for risk patterns that increase the risk of injury
·
Analyze close calls and small errors
It’s not “just another stupid
mistake.” Learn how to use the experience to prevent other
accidents.
Transitional Work Programs
that Work for You: W49
Speaker: Scott Vaka (CareWorks)
Time: 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.
Cost: Free!
Novices and experts benefit from
a review of transitional work programs. The experts at CareWorks can
simplify the process and outline the benefits of implementing a
program at your workplace. Provided as a “getting started” seminar,
the course will arm you with the materials to begin developing a
program at your firm. Statistics say that companies with
transitional work programs save at least $7,000 per injury by
getting employees back to work faster. After the seminar, call
CareWorks to learn how your company can receive a personalized
transitional work program for free!
