The Safety Council of Greater Columbus, sponsored by the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio, is proud to have launched www.safecolumbus.org. The site, exclusively sponsored by Continental Building Systems, provides access to members and nonmembers of the council to learn more about what Ohio employers are doing to ensure a safe workplace for all employees.

Continental Building Systems

The number one core value of Continental Building Systems is SAFETY, with the “utmost concern for the safety and welfare of all individuals”

From the pre-bid process to commencement of work to owner occupancy, Continental Building Systems’ primary objective on any project is to prevent personal injury and property damage. No other feature of the project is of greater importance to Continental Building Systems and nothing overrides this principle.

That’s why Continental is proud to participate in the Safety Council of Greater Columbus (SCGC) and to sponsor the SCGC Web site.

Both organizations are committed to increasing safety awareness on the job and in the community. The Safety Council of Greater Columbus provides quality safety training and outreach efforts to hundreds of companies that work in the Central Ohio area. Continental Building Systems supports this training, not just through sponsorships, but also through active participation, with several employees attending SCGC meetings each month.

“Ongoing, consistent training is crucial to establishing and maintaining an effective safety and health program,” said Meg DeWerth, safety director for Continental Building Systems.

“The SCGC meetings provide a great opportunity to learn about new safety issues, receive reinforcement about existing safety concerns and network with other individuals who face similar challenges,” she said.

In addition to participation in SCGC meetings, all Continental field employees attend the OSHA 10-Hour Training Course and all field supervisors attend the OSHA 30-Hour Training Course, along with many other safety classes.

The results of this training – coupled with management’s 100% commitment to safety – are impressive:

  • Continental Building Systems is the only Columbus-based general contractor currently enrolled in OSHA’s Challenge Program and actively seeking acceptance in OSHA’s VPPC – the Voluntary Protection Program for Construction.

  • Continental has received a prestigious Builders Exchange (BX) safety award for 10 consecutive years.

  • In 2006, Continental became the first and only company to ever receive two BX Safety Innovation Awards in the same year. In 2007, the company duplicated this accomplishment with two additional Innovation Awards.

  • Continental has a consistently low DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) Rate, with an average rate from 2000 to 2006 of 0.25.

  • Continental consistently maintains an average Experience Modification Rate (EMR or X-Mod) of 0.50 – well below industry average.

But safety is about more than awards and numbers: It is about what matters most – keeping all employees, subcontractors, suppliers, vendors and project visitors free from harm. At Continental Building Systems, this value will never change.
